Making the decision to eat healthier isn't very hard. The next step - actually starting to eat foods that are better for you - is a little tougher, but the hardest part is sticking to your healthy eating plans over the next couple of weeks. The good news is that if you keep eating healthy, it will soon become a lifelong habit. Let's take a look at what you can do to make sure you continue to eat healthy until it does become a habit.

Tell someone about your healthy eating plans. If you let a good friend or relative know about your plans, you are more likely to stick to them because you don't want to have to admit later that you gave up. An even better idea is to find someone with the same or similar goal. The two of you can check in on each other's progress and motivate each other to keep going.

Write your plan down. Really, something as simple as grabbing a piece of paper, or a notebook and jotting down what you are going to eat during the day will go a long way towards sticking with your healthy eating plans. You can keep a food journal where you note what you are eating throughout the day. An even better idea is to take a more proactive approach and plan what you will eat ahead of time. A great way to do this is to use a meal planning worksheet. You can learn more about it here and even download a free printable worksheet.

Allow yourself to cheat a little. The important thing to remember here is to only cheat a little, and only once in a while. Why does this work$%: If we go too long feeling that we are not "allowed" to eat a particular food, we crave it more and more. You start think about it all the time and then one day give in and pig out. After that you start feeling guilty about eating that much and start to feel like you have failed yet again to eat healthier. From there it's easy to tell yourself that you already failed and might as well go back to your old, unhealthy way of eating.

Don't let that happen, cheat a little every couple of days, but limit yourself to just one small piece of chocolate, or a small serving of pasta or pizza. That's usually enough to hold your craving at bay, makes you feel good because you truly can eat anything (just not in huge amounts), and keeps you on track with your new healthy eating habits.
